Freezing rain that began falling on portions of Indiana Michigan Power service territory mid-day Friday continued into the evening, causing damage to I&M power lines and disrupting service to more than 12,000 customers. More than 90% of affected customers are in the South Bend/Elkhart area.
Temperatures remain at or below freezing in the area, causing continued icing of trees and equipment and treacherous roadways. I&M crews continue to respond to more than 200 separate outage cases in a safe manner to address damage caused by the continued icing.
I&M cautions customers and the public to use the following safety precautions:
- Stay away from any downed wires and report them to I&M. You can call us at 800-311-4634, report on our app or website, or call 911.
- Trees could fall or drop limbs at any moment, please look up.
- Many roads are icy and may be covered with debris. Please use extreme caution if you must walk outside or drive.
- Traffic lights may not be functioning. Please use caution and be mindful of first responders and utility workers on the roadways.
