CITY OF UPPER ARLINGTON EXCEEDS PARTICIPATION GOAL IN AEP OHIO'S COMMUNITY ENERGY SAVERS PROGRAM

September 30, 2014

AEP Ohio awards Upper Arlington with incentives for energy efficiency project and Sustainability Roadmap

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio, Sept. 25, 2014 – AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), has announced the city of Upper Arlington has successfully completed its participation goal in the AEP Ohio Community Energy Savers program, an innovative energy efficiency pilot program.

The Community Energy Savers program works with governments and communities to encourage residents and businesses to participate in energy efficiency programs offered by AEP Ohio.  Not only do community members benefit from saving energy in their homes and businesses, and money on their energy bills, but also their actions help the community leverage incentives from AEP Ohio that can be put toward an energy improvement project identified by the community.

Working with AEP Ohio, the city of Upper Arlington established a goal of 900 participants in a number of AEP Ohio residential and business energy efficiency programs over a three-month period.  While final participation counts are still being processed and are expected to be concluded by Oct. 31, the city of Upper Arlington has already exceeded its goal.

To achieve this goal, city representatives led an extraordinary effort educating the community on the benefits of energy efficiency and sustainability and promoting AEP Ohio’s energy efficiency programs for residents as well as available programs and incentives for businesses.

“Upper Arlington chose to take part in this program because it was an excellent opportunity to encourage sustainable practices throughout the city. Also, it provided the city the opportunity to secure funding for a planned community improvement project -- the redevelopment of Northam Park,” said the community and economic development manager, Robert Lamb.

For its success, AEP Ohio is awarding the city of Upper Arlington with $90,000 to use toward lighting upgrades at Northam Park.  As part of the successful completion of the program, Upper Arlington also will receive assistance in developing a Sustainability Roadmap that will provide a framework for their ongoing sustainability initiatives into the future.

“We applaud the city of Upper Arlington’s commitment to sustainable practices and its success,” said Jon Williams, manager of energy efficiency and demand response for AEP Ohio.  “By participating in Community Energy Savers, residents and businesses in Upper Arlington were able to learn about and take advantage of energy efficiency programs and incentives available through the company. We invite other communities to join us in what we believe is a win/win for communities, residents, businesses as well as AEP Ohio.”

Communities that may be interested in participating in Energy Savers should contact Sherry Hubbard, Energy Efficiency Programs Coordinator, at sjhubbard@aep.com or call 740-349-4004 to discuss the opportunity.
