Is your refrigerator running? If it is an old, secondary unit in your garage or basement, Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M) will now pay you $40 to come pick it up for recycling. And if you act before the end of September, you could also win $250. No joke.
The customer incentive reward for I&M’s Residential Appliance Recycling Program has increased from $30 to $40. To sweeten the deal, anyone participating in I&M’s recycling program between July 15 and September 30 will automatically be entered into our Recycle & Win Contest drawing to win a $250 gift card that may be used toward the purchase of an ENERGY STAR Appliance. The winner will be announced in October.
Most refrigerators and freezers used as backup units were built before current energy efficiency standards. Dating from the 1980s and early 1990s and before, the technology chugging away inside these units is so outdated that the typical old garage fridge can require three or four times more energy to operate than a newer model. That adds up to an estimated $150 in annual energy savings for people who recycle.
I&M makes it easy to get rid of that outdated refrigerator or freezer. Step 1: Call 877-395-5535, or visit indianamichiganpower.com/save, to schedule a time for I&M to pick-up your old unit. Step 2: A check for $40 arrives in the mail three to four weeks later.
Recycle now and you could win $250. Either way, you will win through a reduction in your energy usage by recycling your old refrigerator or freezer and your $40 customer incentive reward.
