Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) customers might recall seeing “PJM” mentioned during extreme weather or listed on a monthly bill but may not know who they are or how I&M works with them.
I&M and its parent company, American Electric Power (AEP), deliver reliable energy to homes and businesses through various generated sources. From those generated sources, PJM directs power to meet energy demand – and this goes beyond just the communities I&M serves.
As a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), PJM manages the stability of the electric grid across 13 states, including parts of Indiana and Michigan, and Washington D.C. While they don’t directly maintain power lines or related infrastructure, they do work with utility companies, like I&M, that provide reliable service. And to ensure sustainable power for customers, PJM monitors the flow of energy 24/7. This helps to ensure grid stability, which can lead to enhanced reliability into the future.
I&M and PJM are in constant communication. Energy needs change throughout the day, as well as across the different seasons. This is especially true when severe weather or extreme temperatures are forecasted. During these times, PJM works to balance available reserves to meet projected energy demand for the entire RTO area. To maintain customers’ service, even in extreme weather, PJM will tell utilities how much energy to supply and confirm infrastructure is working correctly. From artic temperatures to sunny days, utilities and RTOs work together to stay informed and prepared for changing conditions.
During these extreme weather situations, PJM could ask power companies to request customers conserve energy to protect the electrical grid. Requested conservation efforts are often temporary, and each small action can be important in the long run. These can include adjusting your thermostat setting, delaying when you do laundry or preparing a meal with appliances that use less energy. By participating, it can be impactful for your household, your next door neighbor or those across the RTO area. If the request to conserve is needed, I&M will provide customers with real-time updates and information.
Whether striving for continuous improvements in reliable power or planning for the future, I&M is committed to the communities we serve. Learn more about what we are doing near you.
