Each season has its own unique characteristics. The transition from inches of snow to warm sun can change how you dress and where you spend your time. It can also impact your home – including your monthly Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) bill.

It is important to know how each season can impact your energy use both indoors and out. In the winter, more time is spent inside, likely resulting in higher use of electronics and appliances. And with shorter amounts of daylight, lamps and other light sources can be more in demand. This contrasts with less time indoors and prolonged natural light during the summer, offering the option to unplug items seeing less use - possibly saving energy.
The amount of energy used each month, in any season, is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), which is important to figuring out your total amount due. The Current Bill Summary section of a monthly bill will highlight the total energy used in kWh and charges within the billing period. Customers can access the Usage History (kWh) section to see how energy used in one month compares to that over the last 12 months.
The energy we use to stay comfortable inside each month can vary, whether below zero windchills or triple digit heat – and everything in between. Spring and summer offer an opportunity to use open windows for coolness. But when dangerous heat and humidity pop up, a window AC or central air unit can be vital. Depending on the home’s thermostat setting, these units will run to maintain the coolness setting you select, using energy in the process. With winter, however, our homes remain tightly sealed and our reliance shifts to our furnace or other heat source.
With your smart meter, the Weekly Energy Update, can be beneficial as the seasons shift. By regularly reviewing your Weekly Energy Update, you can track weekly use and identify saving opportunities fit for your home. Not sure where to find your update? Access your I&M account and head to Account Settings. Adjust the preference to automatically receive your Weekly Energy Update in the Usage Notification Preferences.

Tracking can also cover energy consumed outside. This is most evident in homes during the summer with a pool requiring a specific pump or heating system. Additional energy use can come from outdoor living spaces with hanging lights or outdoor televisions that remain on for long periods of time.
