Diverse Energy Mix Powering our Communities

March 26, 2025

When you flip the light switch at home, or plug in your laptop at work, energy flows to provide power. We don’t often think about how power gets to our home or business. From diverse generation resources to the flow of energy across our states, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) uses a balanced energy mix to power communities with reliable, cost effective power.

I&M serves over 617,000 customers throughout its Indiana and Michigan territories – and their energy needs are evolving. To support this growing demand, we rely on a diverse mix of resources to provide reliable power to customers. This includes an emphasis on renewable generation, which in 2024 made up over 86% of energy I&M generated.

I&M is in the process of a major generation transformation, with resources producing energy across Indiana and Michigan including:

Nuclear

The Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant located in Bridgman, Mich. serves as the anchor of the company’s energy resources. Through its two nuclear reactors, it generates carbon-emission free energy 24/7.

Solar

Five solar plants across Indiana and Michigan provide additional generation. This includes the I&M owned and operated St. Joseph Solar Farm, in St. Joseph County, Ind., which harnesses the sun to power approximately 2,700 homes with its 20 megawatts of energy. Plans for additional solar generation through power purchase agreements will continue to support our commitment for a sustainable future.

Hydro

I&M owns and operates six hydroelectric plants along the St. Joseph River in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. This includes the oldest hydro facility in AEP’s fleet -- Twin Branch Hydroelectric Plant. It was commissioned in 1903 in Mishawaka, Ind. All six are operated “run-of-river,” meaning all water goes through the generation equipment and then is passed down the river.

Wind

I&M has purchase agreements from four Indiana wind farms, providing the purchase of power generated at the independently operated facilities. The generation produced from these four wind farms is enough energy to power more than 100,000 homes.

Additional Resources

Located near the Ohio River in Rockport, Ind., the Rockport Coal Plant has long contributed to the innovation of electricity generation technology. The plant’s two units began operation in 1984 and 1989, respectively, and contribute to 2600 megawatts of produced generation. The coal-fueled facility will be fully retired in 2028.

By continuing to diversify energy sources, it allows balance of reliability, environmental sustainability and affordability while fulfilling customer need. A robust energy portfolio also helps to strengthen the resilience of I&M’s generation resources for years to come.
