Restoring Comfort After the Storm

July 12, 2024

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) continues to help with storm restoration after Hurricane Beryl made landfall along Texas’ Gulf Coast. Approximately 139 I&M employees and contractors from across Indiana and Michigan assisted our sister utility company, AEP Texas, and are now assisting CenterPoint Energy in Houston in its restoration efforts.

Our crews worked 16-hour days in the heat and humidity all while navigating storm debris in the El Campo, Texas area to restore power to those approximately 35,500 AEP Texas customers affected by Hurricane Beryl. I&M employees and contractors are joining thousands of line workers, tree trimming experts, engineers and various support staff to return a sense of normalcy and comfort to Texans.

AEP Texas customers were very thankful for our crews who traveled from Indiana and Michigan. Some even voiced their gratitude on AEP Texas’ social media pages:

“Thank you to the families of these AEP linemen, it’s hard on them as well to let their spouses leave.” – Donna

“Thank you to all the linemen working and giving it your all to restore all our electricity. I pray God’s safety and blessings on you all.” – Nelda

“Thank you AEP you have always been and will be #1 in my books. Thank you for your hard work and God bless each and every one of you.” – Mary Ann

“Such a comfort to see those big trucks and know the people in them are there to help. Prayers for everyone involved.” – Rita

“Thank you for all your hard work, and those that came from different cities and states. Be safe out there.” -- Sara

While there is no timetable for our employees’ return, please know we are ready to respond if outages occur here at home.

I&M and our parent company, AEP, are part of a nationwide group of power companies that help each other when significant power outages occur. There are seven mutual assistance groups located geographically across the United States. AEP has operating companies in eleven states, including Indiana and Michigan. We belong to four of the seven groups. For more on how mutual assistance works, you can read this article.
