Staff Volunteer with United Way to Support Community Heading Back to School

August 1, 2024

Heading into August, many are asking, “where did summer go?” As another school year approaches, families are tasked with purchasing school supplies such as notebooks, folders, markers and more before the first day. For some, this supply list comes during an already stressful financial season. Thanks to the United Way of Southwest Michigan and a large group of volunteers, assistance is available.

I&M volunteers helped to pack over 800 backpack for Cass County students.

As part of its School Supply Spectacular, Southwest Michigan’s United Way aims to assist Cass County families by providing free backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies for the upcoming year. With the community expressing interest in these supplies, volunteers are critical to get the bags ready.

Our team answered the call in late July and helped to pack over 800 backpacks with supplies. Upon its completion, the bags were divided up accordingly and transported to four pick-up locations for Cass County families experiencing financial hardship who pre-registered their students.

“We appreciate the opportunity to volunteer with the United Way and take time outside our daily routine to make a difference for our community,” said Mona Livingston, I&M External Affairs manager. “By volunteering, it is evident that we can leave an impact on those in our community and serve others beyond just a backpack – it runs deeper, and our team is here to support that effort.”
