Hands-on STEM Experiences Inspire the Next Generation

September 16, 2024

Having access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education can fuel critical thinking skills, enhance literacy and open possibilities for an impactful future. At Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), these concepts are the foundation to our everyday work. Being able to inspire future generations through that work is something our team and the AEP Foundation strives to make possible.

Throughout our organization, STEM practices are hard at work. From how power flows to its sustainability, our team uses these principles daily to reliably serve our customers. These are also important in how we partner with our community and spark opportunities. Among those, Fort Wayne’s Science Central.

On Sept. 7, Science Central hosted its Free Admission Day, made possible by the AEP Foundation. This day offered access to the organization’s several hands-on, STEM-focused exhibits for visitors of all ages – at no cost. By opening the door to these opportunities, young students are exposed to what a career driven by STEM principles looks like and how those jobs are becoming more abundant with evolving technology present in our daily lives.

“Providing accessibility to experiences like these ensures a solid foundation that compliments work students are currently doing in the classroom,” said Ashley Savieo, director of Economic and Business Development for AEP and member of the Science Central Board of Directors. “From younger students through those in high school and beyond, we can all learn more about the world around us when hands-on opportunities become available in our own communities.”

Through this partnership, the AEP Foundation covered the cost of admission for the day, making a visit to Science Central easily accessible for the numerous guests who attended. But this is just one way to shine a light on opportunities related to STEM concepts. Through mentorships, partnerships and volunteering, we can all help open doors that offer an impact for our future generations.
