How to Keep the Holidays Merry, Bright and Energy Efficient

November 21, 2024

From houses with twinkling lights to tables set for a festive party, it is certainly starting to feel more like the holiday season. Whether extended travel rounds out the year or plans to be the brightest house on the block are in the works, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) encourages homeowners to include energy efficient practices into their holiday preparations. By incorporating these simple steps, homeowners can save energy, and possibly money, on their monthly bill.

Efficient Holiday Baking

For many, cooking a large holiday meal or baking treats is a favorite part of the season. When coordinating what the holiday menu will be, plan baking times to include multiple dishes at once to reduce the need to heat and reheat the oven.

Decking the Halls

Whether planning a bright display or simply hoping the tree gets up in time, consider using a timer for holiday decorations. These smaller lights are harder to enjoy during daytime hours, but by setting displays on a timer, homeowners can control when lights are in action each day. Also, ensure the lights being used are LEDs, which use a fraction of energy compared to conventional bulbs.

Take Advantage of an Open Fire – Chestnuts Optional

When using a home’s fireplace, plan to lower the thermostat to 55 degrees to prevent warm air from the furnace from going right up the chimney. If the fireplace is wood burning, have the chimney cleaned and inspected regularly.

Save Money During Holiday Travel

As the bags are packed for travel this holiday season, don’t heat an empty home. Before leaving, lower the thermostat setting to 55 degrees. This will save energy and prevent water pipes from freezing. Take a walk around the house before locking up to ensure all lights and appliances are either turned off or unplugged to give them a rest while not in use for a while.
