Freezing rain turning to ice moved across portions of Indiana Michigan Power’s service territory on New Year’s Day, interrupting service to about 8,000 customers. The vast majority are in the Michiana area. Many of the outages were caused by trees, branches and limbs hitting power lines under the weight of the precipitation.
I&M crews are responding to customer outages in a safe manner as adverse weather and ice-covered roads are making for treacherous travel conditions this evening.
I&M cautions customers and the public to use the following safety precautions:
- Stay away from any downed wires and report them to I&M. You can call us at 800-311-4634, report on our app or website, or call 911.
- Trees could fall or drop limbs at any moment, please look up.
- Many roads are icy and may be covered with debris. Please use extreme caution if you must walk or drive outside.
- Traffic lights may not be functioning. Please use caution and be mindful of first responders and utility workers on the roadways.
