AEP Foundation Grant Supports Boys & Girls Clubs' STEM Education

(Excerpted from Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne news release)

A $180,000 gift was presented Tuesday by Indiana Michigan Power on behalf of the AEP Foundation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne.

The contribution will fund STEM education including Project Blueprint/Building Futures for Future Builders, a collaborative program with the Northeast Indiana Building Trades, STEM career opportunities, and the purchase of furnishings and learning tools for rooms at the newly opened club facility at 2609 Fairfield Ave. The AEP Foundation gift was the largest single donation given to the Club's STEM program.

Kim Sabrosky, Director of External Affairs for I&M said, “Giving our children and teens more access to science, technology, engineering and math educational opportunities is a high priority for the AEP Foundation and Indiana Michigan Power. The opportunity to partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne on STEM education the past several years has been very rewarding.”

The AEP Foundation focuses on improving lives through education from early childhood through higher education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math and the environment and by meeting basic human needs.

NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company) awarded a $30,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Club program, and General Motors/Fort Wayne Assembly granted $10,000.

The Career Academy and Ivy Tech are also collaborating with the club on the expanded initiative to create interest and better prepare at-risk youth for future STEM careers.  Northeast Indiana Building Trades has been working with the club, including guided tours for members during construction of the new building, to develop the overall program plan. The curriculum launches shortly after Labor Day.

“We want thank I&M, the AEP Foundation, NIPSCO Foundation and GM for their generous gifts that will advance science, technology, engineering and math education,” said Joe Jordan, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne. “Their gifts and the involvement of the Northeast Indiana Building Trades and Michael Kinder and Sons will help our youth learn the value of STEM and the opportunities in vocational trades.”

Members of the building trades will work with club members year-round to develop an interest in various trades such as carpentry, welding, sheet metal, electrical, iron work and so on. It is anticipated that over 300 members will be touched by the program during the upcoming school year.

In the past few years, club participants have visited the I&M training facility near Airport Expressway and learned about engineering and other facets of electricity and the energy industry. “We are pleased and excited that this grant will extend the reach of STEM education for Club participants and take our partnership to a higher level,” Sabrosky added.

The grants were presented at the beginning of a Trades Fair, with representatives of various building trades staffing booths where Boys and Girls club participants learned more about various vocations. I&M line, safety and human resources professionals staffed an I&M booth that included a tabletop safety village, where Club participants learned about safety and how to avoid potential hazards.
