AEP Texas update on winter storm restoration in west Texas (1-4-2015; 1 p.m.)

January 4, 2015

As of 1 p.m. on Sunday, the number of outages in the Alpine, Marathon, and surrounding areas had been reduced to approximately 1,125, according to Fred Hernandez, AEP Texas community affairs manager.   That number compares with approximately 5,400 at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“Most of our efforts today are focused on restoration of service in Marathon and in the Sunny Glen subdivision near Alpine,” Hernandez said.  “Although we are optimistic that we will be able to restore service to most of the residents in those two areas by late this evening, the overall restoration effort is expected to continue for the next few days for some customers.”

Approximately 500 customers remain without power in Marathon and about 250 customers in the Sunny Glen subdivision do not have power.   Most of the remaining outages are concentrated in and around the city of Alpine, as well as outlying areas.

“We have reached a point in the restoration where progress continues but at a slower pace,” Hernandez said.  “Many of the remaining outages have to be addressed individually as compared to a single sustained effort restoring power to a large group of customers at one time.”

The improved weather is helping, Hernandez noted; however, the ground is still quite muddy and difficult for bucket trucks to travel on.  “In many cases, we have to use bulldozers to help move our equipment in and out of work sites,” he said.
