Never use extension cords on a permanent basis, and don't locate them under rugs or furniture.
Avoid overloading outlets with too many powered devices.
Check electrical equipment for frayed wiring or other defects. Repair or replace if you suspect a problem.
Keep electrical panels free from any obstructions, such as boxes or equipment.
Protect outlets in restrooms, kitchens and other wet areas with ground fault circuit interrupters.
