A break in the rain meant taking local students to new heights - literally. Members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeast Indiana joined our team at the Baer Field Training Center on July 10 to walk through the line school and learn more about a career in electric utilities. Set up with various stations, these 4th and 5th grade students got hands on, learning why safety is so important for our crews and how various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills factor into the job.

Last year’s event saw older students attending the line school opportunity, but with a new, younger audience in attendance, one similarity became quickly evident: the bucket truck rides were still the favorite part of the day.
I&M has long supported the Boys and Girls Clubs throughout our entire service area in their efforts to prepare young minds with help from professionals in the community. With a specific focus on STEM concepts, our staff looks to share their professional experiences and knowledge with students to help highlight these future career opportunities.
The Baer Field Training Center, located in Fort Wayne, serves as an in-depth and professional setting, offering future lineworkers a four-year, hands-on training experience. This includes an indoor classroom and training area, as well as an expansive outdoor set-up several yards from the building to offer different levels of training and skills.
