While working at AEP and I&M, Colton Kidder grew his career and his family. He became a proud father of two children, welcoming a baby girl just this summer. Kidder, while a newer dad, has sage advice for fellow working parents and caregivers.
How long have you been with AEP/I&M and in what roles?
I have worked for AEP for 6 years. In that time, I worked for Transmission as a P&C Technologist and as a Distribution Planning Engineer. Then two years ago, I moved into the role of Customer Design Supervisor based in South Bend.
How would you describe your job to someone outside of I&M?
I oversee our customer design engineers who produce the plans to place and build power poles and powerlines that will serve our customers.
Tell us about your family!
I have been married to my wife Samantha for 5 years. We have a 3-year-old son named Milo and a 1-month-old baby girl named Margo.
How does working at I&M help you and your family?
I&M allows me to be present for my family in multiple ways. Especially, the [parental leave policy] for fathers that gave me bonding time with my newborn. Also, our hybrid work policy helpms me take care of my family and if needed.
What safety or leadership skills do you try to impress on your family and friends?
I&M has taught me the value of safety when working around the yard at home. I make it a point to wear gloves and eye protection. I also try to pass along the safety measure to my friends and family.
What’s your favorite part about being a father?
My two favorite things about being a father of young kids are watching them discover the world around them – seeing the amazement in their eyes – and sharing my hobbies with my children.
Any advice for fellow working parents?
I don’t have much advice, since I’ve only been a parent for 3 years, but try to leave all stress and work frustration at the door. You will be much happier at home if you can try to get it out of your mind.
